Colon Hydrotherapy in the Twin Cities: Closed vs. Open Systems and Honest FAQs
Colon hydrotherapy is one of those services people are curious about but often too shy to ask about. That is completely understandable. Healing Within Wellness Center actually began with colon hydrotherapy when founder Kristin Burich opened our doors in 2002, so we have heard every question over the years. If you are researching colon hydrotherapy in St. Paul or the wider Twin Cities, this guide offers straightforward answers about closed and open systems, how to prepare and what a session really feels like.
What is colon hydrotherapy?
Colon hydrotherapy, sometimes called a colonic, gently introduces warm water into the colon and then allows it to release, usually in several cycles over the session. It is different from an at-home enema, which uses a small, single volume of water. A colonic is a longer, guided experience in a private room, with attention to your comfort throughout.
We want to be clear about what it is and is not. Your liver, kidneys and digestive system handle the body's natural cleansing every day. Colon hydrotherapy is a complementary wellness service. It is not a medical treatment, and our practitioners are complementary wellness providers, not licensed medical providers.
A few honest expectations
- Every body responds differently, and there is no single "right" experience.
- A colonic is not a substitute for a balanced diet, fiber, water, movement or medical care.
- Any change you notice on the scale afterward is temporary and not a goal of the service.
- You are always in control. You can pause or end a session at any time.
Closed system vs. open system
Closed-system colon hydrotherapy
In a closed system, a practitioner guides the session from start to finish. Water flows in and out through a sealed, disposable tube, so the process is contained and odor-free. Many first-timers prefer this option because a trained practitioner manages the flow and stays with them. At Healing Within, a closed-system session is 60 minutes.
Open-system colonic
In an open system, you lie on a specially designed table and position a small, disposable tube yourself. Water flows gently in, and you release naturally into the basin beneath you. Many guests appreciate the added privacy and sense of control. An open-system colonic at Healing Within is also 60 minutes, and our video "What Is an Open System Colonic?" shows how it works.

Book NowHow to prepare and what to expect
- Before: drink plenty of water the day before and the day of your session. Eat lightly, and avoid a heavy meal for a couple of hours beforehand.
- What to wear: comfortable, easy-to-remove clothing. You will have privacy to change and will be covered throughout.
- During: many guests describe mild fullness or cramping that passes. Tell your practitioner if anything feels uncomfortable, and the flow can be adjusted.
- After: continue to hydrate, choose simple, easy-to-digest foods and give yourself a relaxed rest of the day.
Who should not book a colonic
Colon hydrotherapy is not right for everyone. Please do not book without medical clearance if any of these apply:
- Inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.
- Recent abdominal or colon surgery.
- Pregnancy.
- Heart disease or kidney disease.
- Severe hemorrhoids, rectal or abdominal hernia, or unexplained abdominal pain or bleeding.
Always check with your physician to see if a service is right for you. Our Colon Hydrotherapy FAQ covers more safety questions, and we will review a health intake with you before your first session.
Quick answers
Does colon hydrotherapy hurt?
It should not. Many guests feel mild pressure or cramping that comes and goes. Your comfort guides the session.
How many sessions do people book?
It varies. Some guests come once, others occasionally. We do not push packages; we will discuss what feels appropriate during your consultation.
Is it embarrassing?
Our practitioners have guided many guests since 2002. Sessions are private, respectful and matter-of-fact.
