Best Sauna and Cold Plunge in the Twin Cities: What to Know Before You Go

Minnesotans have always understood heat. Between Finnish and Scandinavian roots, lake-cabin saunas and winters that stretch from November into April, it is no surprise that the sauna and cold plunge scene in the Twin Cities keeps growing. Pairing warmth with a cold dip, often called contrast therapy, has become one of the most talked-about ways to unwind and recover. If you are planning your first sauna and cold plunge in the Twin Cities, this guide covers how a session flows, how long to stay in each, what to wear and who should check with a doctor first, so your first visit feels calm and confident rather than shocking.

What a contrast session actually looks like

Contrast therapy simply means moving between heat and cold, with rest in between. At Healing Within Wellness Center in Little Canada, a Contrast Therapy session pairs our far infrared sauna, tuned to 4.4–14.4 microns, with a cold tub for $40 per session. A typical flow looks like this:

  • Warm up: settle into the sauna and let your body heat gradually. Breathe slowly through your nose.
  • Cool down: step into the cold tub for a short, controlled dip. Keep your breath long and steady.
  • Rest: sit or lie down for a few minutes, sip water and notice how you feel.
  • Repeat: many guests do two or three rounds, but one round is a perfectly good first visit.

How long should you stay in each?

There is no single right answer, and more is not better. A common starting point is 15 to 20 minutes in an infrared sauna, building toward 30 or more as you get comfortable. For the cold tub, start with 30 seconds to a minute and work up slowly over several visits. Leave either one any time you feel dizzy, lightheaded or unwell. Your comfort sets the pace, not a timer on social media.

Should you finish hot or cold?

Both approaches are popular. Many people like ending on cold because they leave feeling alert and refreshed, which makes it a nice morning or midday reset. Others prefer ending with heat in the evening because it feels more relaxing before bed. One honest note for lifters: Mayo Clinic has covered research suggesting that cold immersion right after strength training may blunt some muscle-building adaptations. If strength gains are your priority, consider separating your plunge from heavy lifting by a few hours, or plunging on rest days.

What to wear and bring

  • A swimsuit or lightweight, comfortable clothing you do not mind getting wet.
  • Sandals or flip-flops for walking between the sauna and the cold tub.
  • A full water bottle. Hydrate before, during and after your session.
  • A change of clothes and a warm layer, especially in January when you head back to the parking lot.
  • Skip heavy lotions and makeup so your skin can breathe in the heat.

Safety first: who should check with a doctor

Heat and cold both place real demands on your heart and circulation. Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic both describe potential benefits along with real risks, so it is worth a quick conversation with your physician before you start if any of these apply:

  • Heart disease, uncontrolled or unstable blood pressure, or a history of fainting.
  • Pregnancy.
  • Raynaud's, cold urticaria or other cold sensitivities.
  • Medications that affect heat tolerance, or implanted medical devices.
  • Alcohol use the same day (never combine alcohol with sauna or cold plunge).

Never plunge alone, keep time limits short at first and get out at the first sign of discomfort. Our Contrast Therapy and Cold Plunge FAQ answers more safety questions in detail.

How often, and how to make it a habit

If you plan to come regularly, the Unlimited Contrast & Recovery Membership is $99.95 per month and includes the sauna, cold plunge, Power Plate, tanning bed and VibraSonic. At $40 per single session, the math tips in favor of membership by your third visit each month. Quick answers

Do I need cold plunge experience?

No. Most guests start with very short dips. Breathing slowly and entering gradually makes a big difference.

Can I use the sauna without the cold tub?

Yes. Infrared sauna sessions are available on their own, and many people simply cool off with a shower between rounds.

What if I feel lightheaded?

Get out, sit down, sip water and let a team member know. Shorter rounds next time are completely fine.
