Red Light Therapy Near St. Paul: How Often, How Long, and What to Expect

If your social feeds are full of glowing red panels and you have found yourself typing "red light therapy near me," you are in good company. Interest in red light has climbed quickly, and with that comes a lot of hype. At Healing Within Wellness Center, just north of St. Paul, we prefer a calmer conversation: what red light therapy is, how long a session lasts, how often people typically come and how to stay comfortable and safe. Think of this as the guide we would give a friend before their first visit.

What red light therapy is (and is not)

Red light therapy, sometimes called photobiomodulation or low-level light therapy, uses specific red and near-infrared wavelengths of light. Unlike a tanning bed, it does not use ultraviolet light, and it does not tan or burn the skin. Our Elan red light therapy session is a relaxing, warm, quiet experience. Many guests use it as part of a skin-care routine to support the look of healthy, radiant skin, and many simply describe it as a peaceful way to recharge after a workout or a long day.

Research on red light continues to evolve, and results vary from person to person. We keep our language honest: red light may support your overall self-care routine, but it is not a substitute for medical care, and it is not a quick fix.

How long is a session?

Red light sessions are short compared to most spa services. A common range is roughly 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the device and your goals. At Healing Within, red light is one of our shorter Refresh services, which makes it easy to pair with something else on the same visit. Longer is not necessarily better; consistency matters more than marathon sessions.

How often should you go?

For most people, consistency is the secret. Many guests come two to four times per week when they are getting started, then settle into a maintenance rhythm of once or twice a week. Some like to bundle red light into a monthly membership so it becomes routine rather than an occasional treat. A few tips:

  • Pick regular days, such as Monday and Thursday, so it becomes a habit.
  • Give it several weeks before deciding how you feel about it.
  • Pair it with good basics: sleep, water, sunscreen and gentle skin care.
  • Keep a simple journal or take photos in the same light if skin is your focus.
  • Pair sessions with something you already do, such as a workout or errand in Little Canada, so the visit fits naturally into your week.

What to expect at your first visit

  • What to wear: you can expose the skin you want the light to reach. Many guests wear minimal clothing in a private room. Remove makeup if you are focusing on your face.
  • Eye protection: the light is bright, so wear eye protection every time. Ask our team about eyewear when you check in.
  • How it feels: gentle warmth and a soft glow. Many people close their eyes and meditate or simply rest.
  • Afterward: there is no downtime. Drink some water and go about your day.

Who should check with a doctor first

Red light is generally considered gentle, but it is not right for everyone. Talk with your physician first if you take photosensitizing medications, are pregnant, have a history of skin cancer, have a light-sensitive condition, or have any active skin concern you are already seeing a dermatologist about. Our Red Light Therapy FAQ answers more safety and comfort questions.

Quick answers

Can I combine red light with an infrared sauna?

Yes. Many guests pair red light with our far infrared sauna for a longer warm, restorative visit. Hydrate well when you combine heat services.

Is a professional session different from an at-home device?

Professional devices are typically larger and cover more of the body at once. At-home devices can be convenient for small areas. Either way, consistency matters most.

Does red light help with tanning?

No. Red light does not contain UV and will not tan your skin.
