Mild Hyperbaric Sessions in Minnesota: Soft vs. Hard Chambers Explained
Hyperbaric chambers have moved from hospital basements into headlines, podcasts and wellness centers. If you have been researching hyperbaric oxygen therapy in Minnesota, you have probably noticed two very different worlds: hard medical chambers in hospitals and soft, mild-pressure chambers in wellness settings. They are not the same thing, and understanding the difference is the best way to set honest expectations. This guide explains both, walks through what a mild hyperbaric session at Healing Within looks like, and shares why accessibility matters so much to us.
Hard chambers vs. soft chambers
Hard (medical) chambers
Hard chambers are rigid steel or acrylic vessels used in hospitals and clinics under medical supervision. They reach much higher pressures and typically deliver concentrated oxygen. This is medical hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), and the FDA has cleared it only for a specific list of medical conditions. It requires a physician's order and medical oversight.
Soft (mild) chambers
Soft chambers are flexible, inflatable chambers that operate at a mild pressure, far lower than hospital chambers. At Healing Within, our hyperbaric session is a mild-pressure wellness experience, not hospital HBOT. We do not claim it delivers the results seen in medical hyperbaric studies, and we do not offer it to treat any disease or condition. Many guests simply describe it as a quiet, restful 90 minutes to lie back, breathe and recharge.
The Twin Cities' only wheelchair-accessible soft chamber
Many soft chambers require you to crawl in through a low zippered opening, which can be a real barrier. Healing Within is home to the only wheelchair-accessible soft hyperbaric chamber in the Twin Cities. That means guests who use a wheelchair, have limited mobility, or simply find getting down on the floor difficult can enjoy a mild hyperbaric session with more dignity and ease. If you have specific access needs, tell us when you book and our team will plan your visit with you.

Book NowWhat to expect during a session
- Length: a hyperbaric session at Healing Within is 90 minutes.
- Screening: we review health questions with you before your first session.
- What to wear: comfortable, breathable cotton clothing. Leave phones, lighters, hand warmers and other electronics or heat sources outside the chamber.
- Ear pressure: as the chamber pressurizes, your ears may feel full, similar to an airplane descent. Swallowing, yawning or gently clearing your ears usually helps. Tell staff right away if you feel discomfort.
- Safety: ask our team to walk you through our safety protocols, how to signal for help and how to pause a session at any time.
- Afterward: drink water, take a moment before you stand and enjoy the rest of your day.
Some guests book a series of sessions as part of a wellness routine, while others come occasionally. There is no one-size-fits-all number, which is one more reason to talk it through during your consultation.
Who should not use a hyperbaric chamber
Safety comes first. Mild hyperbaric sessions are not appropriate for everyone. Please talk with your physician before booking if any of these apply:
- Recent ear or sinus surgery, or a current ear or sinus infection or congestion.
- Pregnancy.
- Certain lung conditions, including any history of collapsed lung.
- Claustrophobia or significant anxiety in enclosed spaces.
- Any condition your doctor has asked you to monitor with pressure changes or flying.
Always check with your physician to see if a service is right for you. Our Hyperbaric FAQ covers more screening questions in detail.
Quick answers
Is a soft chamber the same as hospital HBOT?
No. A soft chamber offers a mild-pressure wellness session. Medical HBOT happens in hard chambers under physician supervision for specific, FDA-cleared conditions.
What if I am a little claustrophobic?
Many soft chambers have clear windows, and you can ask to pause a session. Mention it during screening so we can talk through whether a session feels right for you.
Is hyperbaric part of any package?
Yes. A hyperbaric session is included in the Total Detox Day Experience, currently $550 (regular $600) for a limited time. See Daily Deals for current offers.
