Frequently asked questions

What is an ionic foot bath?

An ionic foot bath is a warm foot soak in a basin of water with added salt. A small device with metal electrodes sits in the water and runs a low electrical current through it. You simply relax with your feet in the warm water for the session. Many guests enjoy it as a calm, restful add-on. Learn more on our ion foot bath page.

Why does the water change color in an ionic foot bath?

This is the question we hear most, and we want to be honest. The color comes mostly from the electrodes, the salt and the minerals in the water. When current passes through salted water, the metal electrodes slowly corrode, producing rust-colored and darker particles. The water changes color even with no feet in it. The color is not toxins leaving your feet, and it does not reveal anything about your organs or health.

Do ionic foot baths actually remove toxins?

No, and we do not market it that way. A peer-reviewed study of a popular ionic foot bath found it did not remove meaningful amounts of toxic elements through the feet. Your liver and kidneys are the organs that handle that work every day. We offer the ionic foot bath purely as a relaxing warm foot soak. If you are interested in supporting your liver and kidneys, explore our Pathways to Wellness blog.

Where can I get an ionic foot bath near St. Paul?

Healing Within is located at 410 Little Canada Rd E in Little Canada, near St. Paul, Roseville, Maplewood, Shoreview, Vadnais Heights and North St. Paul. The ionic foot bath is one of our shorter Refresh services, and many guests add it to a facial, sauna session or hydrotherapy visit. Explore related options on our hydrotherapy services page and book on our booking page.

What does an ionic foot bath feel like?

Most guests feel warm water and, at most, a faint tingle on the soles of the feet. It is a quiet, seated experience, so it is a nice time to read, close your eyes or simply rest. If you feel anything uncomfortable, let our team know and we will stop the session. Afterward, your feet will be rinsed and dried.

Who should not use an ionic foot bath?

Because the device runs a low electrical current through the water, please do not use it if you have a pacemaker or other implanted electrical device, are pregnant, or have open wounds, cuts or sores on your feet. If you have epilepsy, diabetes with reduced feeling in your feet, or any circulation concerns, check with your doctor first. We ask about these before every session.

Are ionic foot baths safe?

For most healthy adults, an ionic foot bath is a gentle, low-key experience: warm water, salt and a very small current. Safety comes down to screening, which is why we ask about implanted devices, pregnancy and skin on your feet before you begin. Staff set up and supervise each session, and the basin is cleaned between guests. If you have any doubts, ask your doctor.

How long is an ionic foot bath, and how often can you do one?

The ionic foot bath is one of our shorter Refresh services, so it fits easily into a visit. How often you come is up to you; many guests enjoy it occasionally as a relaxing add-on rather than on a strict schedule. Members on our Bronze, Silver or Gold plans can mix Refresh services into their monthly visits; see memberships.

What should I wear or bring to an ionic foot bath?

Wear pants you can roll up to the knee or a skirt or shorts. Remove rings, ankle jewelry and anything metal on your feet or legs. Bring a water bottle and, if you like, a book. Let us know if you have sensitive skin or any cuts on your feet before you start.

How much does an ionic foot bath cost?

Please see current pricing on our booking page. The ion footbath is also part of our Total Detox Day Experience, about six hours that includes a facial, body wrap, hyperbaric session, ion footbath, infrared sauna and ear candling, currently $550 (regularly $600) for a limited time.
